How Raise the Bar Supports Professional Certification in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2013: Showcasing the Future

Abstract

ASCE Policy Statement 465, Academic Prerequisites for Licensure and Professional Practice, seeks to advance the educational requirements for licensure as a professional engineer and would require 30 upper division or graduate level credits beyond the bachelor's degree. The policy specifically alludes to the need for further specialization in the statement "These changes1 have created a need for civil engineers to have simultaneously greater breadth of capability and specialized technical competence than that required of previous generations." At the same time several opportunities for specialty certification in civil engineering and more specifically water resources and environmental engineering are now available and the linkages between advanced education and admission to such academies are readily apparent.
