A Statistical Downscaling Model for Extreme Daily Rainfalls at a Single Site
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2013: Showcasing the Future
Abstract
This paper proposes a statistical downscaling (SD) technique to link large-scale climate variables and annual maximum daily rainfalls (AMDR) at a local site. In particular, the proposed SD technique relates the AMDR to the standardized principal components (SPC) of the global climate variables, which are calculated using the robust and efficient technique of singular value decomposition (SVD). The proposal has been developed with two popular general circulation models (GCMs; HadCM3 and CGCM3) and available 41-year (1961 - 2001) AMDR data at six sites in the Chi and Mul River Basins (Thailand). Results have indicated that the SD method is advantageous over an accepted practice (SDSM) because its probability distributions of AMDR scenarios (HadCM3A2 and CGCM3A2) are accurate without making any correction.
