Maintenance of Water Wells

Abstract
This chapter focuses on the maintenance of water wells and other types of wells (e.g., monitoring and injection) and related hydraulic structures, such as radial collector wells and the toe drains of dams. An important step in implementing well maintenance is to understand the performance degradation or failure modes that are possible. The chapter summarizes the problems associated with wells and the causes of these problems to categorize them. It discusses material selection and design to prevent or mitigate corrosion and prevent incrustation (or encrustation). The chapter also describes the early-warning monitoring for deterioration and summarizes useful information to collect about wells for both troubleshooting and predicting problems in preventive maintenance. Finally, the chapter focuses on the economics of well maintenance.
