Physical and Grain Sized Characterization of the Wastes Generated in the Civil Construction in the City of Recife
Publication: Geo-Frontiers 2011: Advances in Geotechnical Engineering
Abstract
Civil construction, currently, is expanding in much of the world due to the rapid population growth, and with this expansion in construction there has been a corresponding increase in the generation of construction and demolition wastes (CDW). This CDW, many times, is destined for inadequate disposal sites and can pose a threat to human health and the environment. With this concern in mind, a study was conducted of the CDW generated in a building project in the city of Recife, with the objective of promoting the reuse of the CDW. The methodology was based on tests of physical, grain size and mineralogical characterization and direct shear strength with the addition of polypropylene fiber. The results show the importance of the reuse of the CDW with fibers for geotechnical projects.
