Developing an Alternative Water Supply Strategy for the City of Plantation, Florida

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2010: Challenges of Change

Abstract

The South Florida Water Management District has determined that traditional water supply sources will not be sufficient to meet the demands of a growing population and needs of the environment, agriculture, and industry over the next twenty years. Consequently, the City of Plantation has investigated several alternative water supply options to meet future needs. Projects considered in the present analysis include developing the brackish Floridan Aquifer through the use of reverse osmosis treatment, providing for surface water recharge through the use of advanced wastewater treatment, and expanding the current reclaimed water system. This paper examines alternative water supply projects in the context of sustainability and identifies the project best suited for implementation at the City of Plantation.
