Optimum Management of Existing Surface Water Resources and Land of a Water Logged Area Using DP Model
Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2010: Challenges of Change
Abstract
The main objective of the study was to develop a model to obtain an optimal reservoir operating policy for irrigation of multiple crops with stochastic inflows and crop water requirements by using stochastic dynamic programming to optimally allocate the available water among all crops within a given period of time. Three reservoirs have been developed based on the results of optimum utilization of land and water of the water logged area of North Tripura district, India using RS and GIS analysis. The model takes into account reservoir inflow through three natural drainage, rainfall on the study area, and intrapersonal competition for water among multiple crops obtained from linear programming, the heterogeneous nature of crop response to the level of irrigation applied. The model is applied to a water logged area of the North Tripura district of India. This model can be used for optimal utilization of the available water resources of any reservoir system to obtain maximum benefits. The operating policies evolved by the study can be adopted in the field, for optimizing the utilization of the existing resources to obtain maximum benefits. The multi-reservoir model based on the SDP gives satisfactory performance in this study.
