Abstract
Wood piles used for marine construction are commonly treated with preservatives to inhibit attack by marine borers and gribbles, thus extending the service life of the pile. Regulatory restrictions on the use of creosote have necessitated examining alternative wood treatments such as ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate (ACZA). In addition, installation of protective outer wraps have been used for years as an additional protective measure and are more recently being considered to aid in retaining the preservative and reducing the amount of preservatives released into the marine environment. This paper discusses the metal loss rates from ACZA treated piles and the effectiveness of four protective pile wraps for minimizing the rate of release of the wood preservatives into the water column.
