Modeling Passing Vessels and Moorings in Port Design and Operation

Publication: Ports 2010: Building on the Past, Respecting the Future

Abstract

This paper presents recent experience in applying numerical modeling of passing vessel hydrodynamic forces together with dynamic mooring models for planning, design, and operation of a planned container port in Norfolk, Virginia. A comparison is made of empirical methods and numerical time domain methods of calculating passing vessel forces. Recommendations are made on the type of models required to accurately represent the magnitude and variation of the passing ship effects. The methods described were used to determine the location of the planned wharf to minimize effects due to passing ships.
