Abstract
This paper discusses the process the authors have used to repair waterfront timber structures to meet current demands. Most of the waterfront structures constructed during the wars, or soon after, are past their intended design life. However, with the tightening economy, owners are requesting that these timber structures be repaired instead of spending larger capital outlays for new concrete or steel structures. The authors have inspected and designed repairs for timber structures along the waterfront that have included: historic boat houses, wharves, trestles, and dolphins. The entire repair process is presented including inspection, condition assessment, analysis, design, and construction. This paper also addresses many of the various alternative repair concepts currently in use and provides recommendations based on the authors' experience.
