Abstract
Tongji-1 lunar soil simulant (short for TJ-1) was recently developed by Tongji University, China. Originated from the red volcanic ashes in northern China, TJ-1 is proposed as a substitute for lunar regolith in impact tests of the lunar landers used in the second phase of Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. The raw wet materials were dried in the oven, then crushed by special instruments and finally sieved in order to remove large particles. By adjusting the gradation of the pre-processed volcanic ashes and the density, this paper derives a recipe for TJ-1, of which the basic mechanical characteristics (e.g., internal friction angle, cohesion and compression index) match the typical values of lunar regolith collected from 0 to 30 cm below lunar surface. The new lunar stimulant has been recently used in impact tests of lunar landers in China.
