New Circular Hybrid Steel-Concrete-FRP-Concrete Column and Its Fire Performance
Publication: Earth and Space 2010: Engineering, Science, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments
Abstract
In this paper, a new circular hybrid Steel-Concrete-FRP-Concrete column (simply called SCFC column) is proposed. The new column is made up of four parts: outer steel tube, inner FRP tube, annular concrete between two tubes, and core concrete encased in FRP tube. Due to the protection of annular concrete and outer steel tube, the temperature of FRP tube may not exceed the glass-transition temperature of polymer matrix during the whole course of a fire. The fire resistance time of a SCFC column can be obtained by comparing temperature-time curves with glass-transition temperature of polymer matrix. Temperature distributions in a SCFC column under ISO-834 fire and under a natural fire based on Cardington test 5 are analyzed using TFIELD, a program for temperature field analysis written by authors, and the temperature-time curves of FRP are presented. Numerical modeling results demonstrate that the new circular hybrid Steel-Concrete-CFRP-Concrete column is of excellent fire resistance.
