Development of Wireless Sensing System for Structural Health Monitoring
Publication: Earth and Space 2010: Engineering, Science, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to develop a new wireless sensing system which can provide the requirements of autonomous structural health monitoring, which include 1) reliable wireless communication data, 2) accurate signal conditioner hardware for ambient vibration sensors (VSE-15D), 3) capable for continuous long-term monitoring. Based on the prototype of WiMMS (Stanford University unit), a new generation wireless sensing unit, called NTU-WSU, is developed to meet these requirements. Besides, an embedded host node is first included in the wireless sensing system. Verification of NTU-WSU wireless sensing system was conducted using the ambient vibration data of both building and bridge. This newly developed NTU-WSU is capable to collect reliable data from high performance sensor for continuous structural health monitoring.
