A Review of Vortex-Induced Vibrations

Abstract
Vortex-induced vibration occurs when the vortex-shedding frequency for flow past a cylinder matches with the natural frequency of the cylinder. The result can be a transverse vibration or an in-line vibration of the cylinder, or a combination of the two. Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) is usually an unwanted phenomenon which can lead to disastrous consequences. This paper will discuss the fundamentals of VIV and its causes. A brief history of relevant early research will be presented. Recent advances in understanding of VIV will be presented both from an experimental and computational point of view.
