Abstract
Fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor presents superiority in the measurement of strain in structural monitoring system since its reliability, durability, high accuracy and ease of implementation. In this work, a novel FBG strain sensor is developed and experiments are conducted on the universal material testing machine to calibrate its strain transferring characteristics and fatigue property. These FBG strain sensors are bonded onto the surface of a pipeline model to measure strain variations under the action of vortex-induced vibration(VIV) and relative frequency analysis of vibration responses are carried out. The results demonstrate that the designed encapsulated FBG strain sensor is a highly accurate and reliable method of measuring strain of model pipeline under VIV.
