Rigid Blocks Failure Mechanism for Stability of Shallow Tunnel Using Upper Bound Solution
Publication: Recent Advancement in Soil Behavior, in Situ Test Methods, Pile Foundations, and Tunneling: Selected Papers from the 2009 GeoHunan International Conference
Abstract
A rigid block failure mechanism of shallow rectangular tunnel is proposed to calculate the needed support pressure σT for tunnel stability using upper bound solution. The velocity discontinuities in the side wall of the shallow rectangular tunnel of the failure mechanism occur in both radial and tangent directions. Formula for calculating support pressure σT using upper bound solution are deduced based on the presented failure mechanism, and the calculation program is compiled. It is shown that the proposed rigid block failure mechanism can be used effectively to analyze the stability problems of shallow rectangular tunnel using upper bound solution.
