Long Term Effect of a Stream Restoration Plan on Water Quality

Publication: World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2009: Great Rivers

Abstract

A stream restoration plan near the headwaters of the Swatara Creek was implemented to reduce the acidity and dissolved metals associated with coal mine drainage. The plan has been in effect since 1995, though various components of the plan have been phased in over several years, the last of which was installed in 2002. Specific stream restoration components included limestone channels and diversion wells, anoxic and oxic limestone drains and constructed wetlands. The stream data selected for the analysis includes: daily mean flow, daily pH value, daily specific conductance, and daily water temperature. Low flow and high flow are predicted to have significant effects on acidity reduction. An autoregressive model is used to study trends associated with daily specific conductance and daily pH values. The prediction model, based on current effectiveness derived from available data, can provide future benefit to those responsible for the development or refinement of similar restoration plans.
