Architectural Precast Panel Systems Used For Lateral Force Resistance
Publication: Structures Congress 2009: Don't Mess with Structural Engineers: Expanding Our Role
Abstract
Precast exterior wall panels in multi-story buildings are typically supported by the building structure and serve the purpose of building enclosure and aesthetics. Precast, however, is a strong and stiff material and can also provide structural strength and stiffness to a building. In a recent large project, several multi-story buildings were designed allowing the precast exterior wall panels to serve the double duty of enclosure and lateral force resistance. This design resulted in efficiency that saved several million dollars in the structural frame cost while maintaining the abundance of architectural detail and aesthetics required for this notable project. Important considerations for the design of the precast include compatibility of deformations between precast and the structural frame, concrete stresses, shear load accumulation and shear connections. Pre-fabrication and construction considerations are also discussed as well as temporary support requirements for the structural frame.
