Engineering the Arch and Roof of Wembley Stadium
Publication: Structures Congress 2009: Don't Mess with Structural Engineers: Expanding Our Role
Abstract
The new Wembley Stadium replaces the former stadium which was built in 1923. The aim of this project was to design and build a state-of-the-art national stadium, unlike any other in the world, to be the home of English football and to host large events such as Cup Finals, music events and athletics. The new stadium, with its arch, is an international icon as was the old stadium with its twin towers. In engineering the structure, the design team needed to incorporate the original architectural intent to create an elegant exposed steel structure.
