Structural Identification of Constructed Systems: Experimental Considerations
Publication: Structures Congress 2008: Crossing Borders
Abstract
Structural identification, the process for determining `how a structure works', begins with experimental measurement of the in-situ structure, to obtain data on the loading and response at various timescales. By timescales is meant not only the data rate (dynamic or static) but the duration (ranging from hours to years), so that both short term dynamic testing and long term performance monitoring are included. In the armory of the experimental engineer there exists a huge range of testing technology, a range constantly expanding as technological advances lead to new sensors types and new analysis procedures. This paper is a precursor to a more comprehensive study on the range of technology available and in use. It provides sufficient information, including an extensive reference list, for a busy engineer considering the commission of an experimental investigation to have an overview of the technology available, and in the presentation is accompanied with case studies highlighting specific applications.
