Comparative Studies of the Structural Fire Engineering Design of Steel and Composite Structures

Abstract
Fire resistance of steel framed structures has traditionally been ensured by attaching insulating materials around the steelwork. These include concrete, masonry, and plaster but lightweight specialist systems are now largely used including sprays, boards, blankets, and intumescent coatings. These can be expensive and evidence from real fires suggests that reduced levels of protection may be sufficient.
