Study on the Applicability of Different Lane Use Rule

Abstract
Lane use rule is very important for freeway management. Right-side rule and separate lanes rule are studied in this paper. Taking delay as the main index of efficiency, the influence of different lane use rule to the operation of freeway with two unidirectional lanes was gotten by simulation. The result shows that separate lanes rule is fit for Chinese freeway situation while right-side rule is only fit for situation when neither traffic volume nor truck proportion is high; the speed difference of the two vehicle types and the discrete degree of speed inside one vehicle type are the main factors when lane use rule is considered.
