Model and Algorithm for Optimization of Urban Inter-Zone Vehicle Schedule

Publication: Logistics: The Emerging Frontiers of Transportation and Development in China

Abstract

In this paper we propose a model and algorithm for optimization of urban inter-zone vehicle schedule. We assume that the origin-destination trip demand is given. As the frequency and schedule mode are very important for public traffic efficiency, we estimate an optimal structural model, which minimize a generalized cost function that encompasses two components: (a) waiting time; (b) operation cost. All transit vehicles have a fixed capacity and two kinds of schedule mode, regular vehicle and inter-zone vehicle, are adopted in this model. An improved genetic algorithm is proposed, which makes progress with selection operator, crossover operator, mutation operator and the stop criterion of simple genetic algorithm, adding optimal reserved and revised strategies. The optimal model and improved genetic algorithm have been validated by the real scheduling data. The result indicates that they are applicable and effective.
