In-Situ Testing of Operation Stability in Hydraulic Turbine Generator Unit

Abstract
In order to increase the rated power and improve the efficiency, the old runner of hydraulic turbine generator unit is replaced by a new and improved design, from which the dynamic performance is altered. In this study, in situ test is conducted to inspect the operation stability of the new hydraulic turbine generator unit. The transducers (i.e., laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) and proximity probe) are used to measure the vibration and swing magnitude of the unit. The test results show that the vibration amplitude becomes bigger with the hoist of rotating speed, but it is not proportional to the square of rotating speed. The mass of rotating component of hydraulic turbine generator unit is thus balanceable. At the same time, the vibration and swing amplitudes are less than the design limit of hydraulic turbine generator unit, and the primary frequencies of vibration and swing are relevant to the rotating speed. Based on the in situ vibration test conducted, it is concluded that the new hydraulic turbine generator unit can be run stably.
