ISRU for Lunar Surface Structures

Publication: Earth & Space 2008: Engineering, Science, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments

Abstract

It is likely that the first structures suitable for human habitation on the Moon will be surface structures. This is because without an adequate infrastructure, especially power sources, it is very difficult to do any construction. Once we have a presence on the Moon we will be able to begin to use local resources to supplement imported materials for building. This paper summarizes some of these initial steps to utilizing ISRU for expanding the human presence on the Moon and also introduces the concept of synergistic interdependencies with Mars settlements.
