Innovations in Watermain Renewal

Publication: Pipelines 2007: Advances and Experiences with Trenchless Pipeline Projects

Abstract

Recent advances in minimal-disruption rehabilitation for water systems are increasing the willingness of utility owners and operators to consider these technologies. This trend follows the lead of trenchless sewer rehabilitation methods that have been established as viable options to mitigate the impacts of replacing aging infrastructure. Water system renewal is, however, a more complicated issue with unique requirements. Products must withstand the internal pressures inherent in distribution systems, while being suitable for potable water. The trenchless technology industry is dynamic, with new options frequently coming to the forefront. In this paper some of the major issues and concerns for consideration when selecting a water system renewal technology are presented and discussed. This paper focuses on recent advances for lining potable watermains with polyethylene and polyester-reinforced polyethylene (PRP) products in North America, the UK and Europe. It also discusses the implementation of a revolutionary method for internal reinstatement of service connections. Further, the paper reviews the future of water system renewal, discussing outstanding hurdles as well as the next logical steps in industry evolution.
