A New Formula for Calculating Lateral Earth Pressure at Certain Displacement
Publication: Advances in Earth Structures: Research to Practice
Abstract
Based on the characteristics of earth pressure changing with the displacement of the retaining wall, a new formula for earth pressure considering wall deformation is proposed. The three parameters used in the proposed formula are calculated by the classic Rankine earth pressure coefficients or back-calculated by three sets of measured values of displacement and earth pressure. The formula is verified by the centrifugal formula test. Comparing the calculated earth pressures employing the proposed formula with those measured by the centrifugal testing, the difference is negligible, less than five percent.
