Abstract

A method for direct measurement of hydraulic conductivity of unsaturated soil is presented. The method is based on a system of capillary flow from a controlled water table up into a soil column in initially air-dry condition. By measurement of change in soil water content at a known vertical position from the water table, together with a prepared soil water retention curve, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity K(θ) can be calculated. The calculation is based on Darcy's Law and continuity equation. The proposed method was tested with 6 soil samples and compared with the indirect methods of van Genuchtent and Gardner. The results of K-θ relationships show linear trends in semilog scale in a form of K = ce where a and c are parameters.
