Long-Term Durability of Polyester Water Pipe in High Chloride Environments

Publication: Pipelines 2005: Optimizing Pipeline Design, Operations, and Maintenance in Today's Economy

Abstract

The need for a corrosion resistant barrier liner in Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) Pipe used in water and waste water applications is often misunderstood. This can result in over specification and unnecessary expense for the end user. Different corrosion or chemical attack mechanisms exist for different chemical exposures and temperatures. The primary degradation mechanisms are defined by Arrhenius law for the rate of a chemical reaction and Fick's law for the rate of diffusion. This paper presents exposure test data and discusses how Arrhenius and Fick's law drive the rate and type of degradation in water, waste water and sewer applications.
