Evolution of Channels Upstream of Dam Removal Sites

Publication: Managing Watersheds for Human and Natural Impacts: Engineering, Ecological, and Economic Challenges

Abstract

A generalized model of channel evolution upstream of dam removal sites has been developed based upon observations of dam removal projects, dam failures, reservoir drawdowns, at post glacial lakes and dams, along with available records and literature. The complimentary flow chart identifies a series of potential channel evolution trends and provides examples of each. The model can be used as a preliminary screening tool to assess potentialdam removal impacts. Several parameters are used to help identify potential channel trends include the presence of sediment, presence or absence of a well defined thalweg across the pool bed, type of sediment deposit, and sediment gradation. The final parameter is the ratio between the pool's width versus the anticipated pre-dam channel width, acknowledging that narrow pools behave differently from wide pools.
