Sedimentation Studies for Dam Removal Using HEC-6T
Publication: Managing Watersheds for Human and Natural Impacts: Engineering, Ecological, and Economic Challenges
Abstract
Not all dam removals will need detailed sedimentation studies. However, in many cases it is not possible to predict how significant those processes might be without a detailed sediment investigation. The author knows of no computer program that qualifies as an "expert system" for making such predictions. However, by coupling the computational capability of HEC-6T with principles of river morphology and sedimentation engineering, he has made computations for a variety conditions including such highly disturbed watersheds as Mt. Saint Helens. Likewise, one who understands river mechanics, sedimentation engineering and geomorphology can discover much about the sedimentation processes that will result from the removal of a dam. However, one has to formulate, very carefully, what questions to ask of the computer program and to design the necessary computational experiments to address those questions. Knowledge gained from each application has contributed features for HEC-6T that aid in modeling dam removals.
