Abstract
Since the 70s, the population of the São Paulo Metropolitan area has been growing at very high rates per decade. Due to the lack of urban planning and the illegal occupation of the environmental protection areas (around watercourses and on slopes), the percentage of impervious areas in the Upper Tietê River Basin, the main watercourse in the city, has increased significantly. As a result, flood frequency in the basin has also increased. The impact of impervious soil due to changes in the Soil Conservation Service "Curve Number" (CN) was estimated for a pilot area using Ikonos satellite images to quantify land use classes. A CN map was produced using the overlap between a land use map and a geological map. Then the surface runoff was simulated using the SCS runoff calculation technique.
