Fatigue Characteristics of Modified Asphalts and SMA

Publication: Applications of Advanced Technologies in Transportation Engineering (2004)

Abstract

The fatigue damage behavior of a base asphalt and various modified asphalts were evaluated by DSR tests at 5% and 10% strains. Two kinds of evaluation method of complex shear modulus (G*) were adopted. The results showed that the complex modulus G* can characterize qualitatively the damage trend of various binder and the specification of Dissipated Energy Ratio DER can be directly and explain quantitatively the damage degree of fatigue. The fatigue testing of Natural lake asphalt SMA and PG76-28 SMA results at controlled strain level showed that the SMA made with natural asphalt has higher initial flexural stiffness.
