Lateral Torsional Buckling of Composite Beams Comparison of More Accurate Methods with Eurocode 4

Publication: Composite Construction in Steel and Concrete IV

Abstract

In Eurocode 4-1 the design bending resistance for distorsional lateral buckling is based on a reduction of the plastic design bending moment. The reduction factor depends on the elastic critical bending moment Mcr. It is shown that the elastic critical bending moment of composite beams can be determined with help of the analogy between the differential equilibrium equations of the compression member on elastic foundation and the lateral torsional buckling problem. Based on this analogy a new method for the determination of elastic critical bending moment is derived and compared with the method given in Eurocode 4-1.
