Statistical and Economic Data Analyses for the Impact of DDT, Chlorine, Fluoride and other ‘‘Chemicals'' on Public Health
Publication: Bridging the Gap: Meeting the World's Water and Environmental Resources Challenges
Abstract
The 20th century was unprecedented by economic and technological change with increased life expectancy and improved health. The beneficial use of chlorine, DDT. fluoride, and other chemicals have been attacked by doomsday prophets who are anti-technologists with weak-to-false arguments who gain for their attacks much publicity from the media. If technology is killing us, why are we living so long? Documented references are presented on topics such as: life expectancy, advances in science and technology with chlorine, DDT, and nutrition (clean water, increased and regulated food supply, immunization, proper use of pesticides, antibiotics, and knowledge of germ theory and personal hygiene), costs of not using technologies, and costs to others. Details of the alleged dangers of DDT and other chemicals and technologies will be addressed. The use and per person costs of bottled water versus coagulated, filtered, chlorinated, and fluoridated water are outlined. Six arguments against anti-technologists and false prophets are discussed in great detail. Technophobia and chemophobia and false information have driven more reasoned critics from the public arena and the policy process. The beneficial use of chlorine, DDT, fluoride, and other chemicals needs to be clearly understood.
