Resonance of a Harbour under Edge Waves Forcing

Publication: Coastal Engineering 2000

Abstract

The resonance properties of a rectangular basin open to a sloping beach in case of forcing by edge waves is investigated. A modelling method partially analytical and partially numerical is used. Resonance peaks exist at infragravity frequencies in case of a small harbour (lengthscale ~ 102m). The amplification can be significant: an edge wave of 1 cm amplitude can excite velocities up to 40cm/s inside the harbour. It is found that the incident edge wave is scattered by the harbour into reflected edge waves, leaky waves and evanescent waves. These latter are trapped waves close to the obstacle.
