Channel Routing in River Networks Using NWS FLDWAV Model

Abstract

An extended relaxation technique is developed to simulate unsteady flows in river channel networks and the technique is implemented into the National Weather Service dynamic wave routing model FLDWAV. The new technique is an extension of the original relaxation method in the FLDWAV model initially developed for dendritic (tree-type) channel systems. This technique greatly increases the FLDWAV model's capability to model any complicated river network system which includes complex bifurcations. Some test results illustrating the technique's accuracy, robustness and computational efficiency are reported in this paper.
