Hydraulic Design for Channel Restoration on the Santa Ana Reach of the Rio Grande
Publication: Building Partnerships
Abstract
Half a century of flood control activities have altered the hydrologic regime of the Middle Rio Grande. Changing the river from an aggrading braided system to a narrower degrading channel was the intent and result of large storage reservoirs and extensive river training. However, channel degradation has resulted in deterioration of the aquatic and terrestrial habitat through the river valley. To mitigate the effects of channel degradation, channel restoration alternatives were designed for the Santa Ana Reach of the Rio Grande. In-channel gradient control structures, which provide vertical stabilization, allow for fish passage, and promote more favorable aquatic habitat were investigated. Modifications to floodplain terraces and high-flow side channels were also evaluated. One- and two-dimensional hydraulic modeling, sediment transport analyses and geomorphic investigation were used to design alternatives that promote a stable channel and improve habitat for native fishes. The preferred restoration plan was selected from an incremental cost analysis of the alternatives.
