Abstract
Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) is a well-established measurement technique for determining free-surface velocities spanning large surfaces in open-channel flows. The authors have successfully used the technique for mapping velocity fields in laboratory and field conditions. The technique comprises four main components: illumination, seeding, recording, and image processing. Current efforts are focused on the refinement of the technique's components for cost- and time-effective implementation in various laboratory and field investigations. The paper presents recent developments regarding optimization of the seeding material and seeding procedures, as well as extension of LSPIV use for obtaining full flow diagnostic in laboratory conditions. Comparison of LSPIV measurements with Acoustic-Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) measurements and results of numerical simulation are also presented to illustrate the accuracy of the technique.
