Abstract
Recently, there has been considerable interest in using side-looking Doppler systems for velocity indexing and port operations. A brief discussion of the Doppler technique in comparison to traditional methods such as travel-time and point measurements is presented. The range limitations inherent in horizontal Doppler applications are also discussed, and several approaches for overcoming those limitations are described. SonTek offers both side-looking profilers and side-looking range-integrating current meters in extensive use. Results from a number of deployments where SonTek side-looking Doppler systems have been used for hydrology and port monitoring are presented.
