Estimation of Turbulence Parameters Using An ADCP

Publication: Building Partnerships

Abstract

Acoustic Doppler current profilers permit the observation of complete profiles of water velocities. In this paper, analysis techniques which use higher moments of the ADCP data in order to estimate turbulence parameters are presented and the errors associated with this analysis are discussed. Of particular importance is understanding the details of ADCP errors, so these errors are examined for different modes of operation during a 2 week experiment in San Francisco Bay. Finally, the discussion addresses limitations of the turbulence analysis for certain modes of operation.
