Sediment Movement from the Removal of Dams on Battle Creek

Publication: Building Partnerships

Abstract

The removal of two Pacific Power and Electric Power dams, South Diversion Dam and Coleman Diversion Dam on South Battle Creek will facilitate the improvement of the anadromous fish habitat in the Battle Creek watershed. Battle Creek drainage is a tributary of the Sacramento River located near Red Bluff, California. The goal of this study is to describe the sediment characteristics of the Battle Creek drainage and show changes in sediment characteristics from removal of South Diversion Dam. The movement of sediment from the removal of South Diversion Dam will be presented based on results from a one dimensional unsteady flow and sediment transport model. Conclusions will be drawn on the temporary effects the dam removal may have on sediment movement.
