Is Dispersion Important in Water Distribution Systems?

Abstract
Water quality deteriorates between the points of treatment and consumption in water distribution systems. Many water quality problems have been reported in dead-end pipes and other remote service areas where intermittent flows are common. To improve predictions of water quality in peripheral zones of the distribution system, network models need to account for advective-dispersive transport under low flow conditions. Experimental results presented here show that hydrodynamic dispersion can be a significant transport mechanism in intermittent laminar flow, a condition that is prevalent in dead-end lines of a water distribution system.
