Water Distributions Systems Analysis: Analysis of Domestic Demand Patterns
Authors: Julia Race and David BurnellAuthor Affiliations
Publication: Building Partnerships
Abstract
Smart management of distribution networks calls for a deep understanding of domestic water- use patterns. It is important to analyse not only average values, but how and why these vary from house to house. Diurnal patterns affect daily network scheduling and leakage analysis whilst the makeup of demand - for example the ramp-up in hot weather - affects longer-term water -resource planning. The paper discusses analysis of usage patterns from nearly 2000 accurately-logged domestic sites, with meters logged every 15 minutes. Various ways of characterising usage are outlined, including occupancy models and spectrums of usage frequency. Alternative models are proposed for domestic usage, with explanatory variables covering both the physical aspects of the site and the life-styles of its occupants.
