Simulation of the Real-time Multiple Reservoir Operating Environment with a Multiple Reservoir Operation Optimization Model

Abstract

There are two different problem aspects in multi-reservoir operation problem, that is, planning and real-time operation. For the planning problem, we may assume that we have the perfect knowledge of inflow unlike in real-time operating environment. For the real time operation, however, we have to use forecasted inflows at individual reservoirs instead of the actual inflow when we make release decisions. In this study, we evaluate the appropriateness of using a deterministic optimization model, which is called CoMOM(Coordinated Multiple Reservoir Operating Model) for real-time multi-reservoir operation. It is assumed that we do not have the perfect knowledge of future inflow and we simulate the situation of using CoMOM in real-time operational environment in Han River Basin in Korea.
