Hydraulic Design Recommendations for the Railroad Bridges across the Wisconsin River at Sauk City, Wisconsin

Abstract

Study of the railroad bridges crossing the Wisconsin River at Sauk City, Wisconsin, indicates that increasing the width of the west bridge is the best way to improve flow conditions through the west bridge without adversely impacting the gravel/cobble bar immediately upstream of the west bridge. A two-dimensional model was used to design a rock guide dike just upstream of the new opening and determine where bank protection is needed after construction of the project. Flow direction information gathered from the two-dimensional model was used with HEC-RAS to perform the scour analysis.
