Abstract
The current demand for structural engineers trained to practice in a global economy coupled with the need for higher levels of expertise in various civil engineering specialties is forcing civil engineering faculties and technical societies to reexamine the objectives and role of their programs for addressing these needs. Issues related to accreditation, minimum entry level education for practice, ability to utilize effectively advanced communication technologies, and the attraction and retention of undergraduate students to civil engineering will be discussed.
