Abstract
Seismic dampers represent an advanced technology that is increasingly being utilized to dissipate energy from an earthquake. The seismic dampers can be positioned either within the frame of a building or within a seismic isolation system. When used as a component of a seismic isolation system, seismic dampers are used to limit the isolation system displacement. However, for certain types of earthquake ground motions, seismic dampers that are used within an isolation system have been shown to increase the interstory drifts of the superstructure. The research presented herein investigates the ability of adaptive seismic isolation systems to resist disparate earthquake ground motions. The isolation system consists of sliding isolation bearings in combination with a controllable fluid damper. The results of the research show that the adaptive sliding base isolation system is capable of simultaneously limiting the response of the isolation system and the superstructure for disparate earthquake ground motions.
