Abstract
In 1996 New York State introduced a "high performance" concrete mixture to improve the performance and durability of bridge decks. Designated Class HP concrete, fly ash and microsilica were substituted for a portion of the cement resulting in lower permeability while maintaining good handling characteristics. A recent study assessed its performance and compared to previously used bridge deck concretes. Results indicate that it has increased cracking resistance of bridge decks and in turn increases service life expectations. This paper summarizes this study and the results.
