Code Issues and Applications for FRC Utility Poles
Publication: Advanced Technology in Structural Engineering
Abstract
For several decades, fiber reinforced composites (FRC) have been used in increasing measures to replace other construction materials in a wide range of structural and aesthetic applications. FRC utility poles have been manufactured for over 30 years. Yet, the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) has not specifically addressed safety issues for FRC poles in previous editions. Change proposals have been conditionally accepted to introduce specific strength and load factors for FRC poles. This paper will review the change proposals submitted to the NESC and the issues being considered before final acceptance. Applications for FRC utility poles will also be discussed.
