Transmission Line Structure Loading Standard: Does the Industry Need One?

Abstract
This paper presents an overview of current Standards, Codes, and Manuals that provide guidance in determination of structural loads for transmission line towers. The advantages and disadvantages of a separate loading standard for transmission line structures and alternative options will be presented. The issue of an appropriate Standard is important, as the electric power industry moves into a deregulated competitive market where "responsible" innovation will be the key to success. There is currently no industry consensus design "standard" that specifically addresses transmission line structure loads.
